- The institute shall be based on the Hub and Nodes model. The Hub will be at the founding institution (hosting the current CoE in IKS) and the Nodes will be organizations and institutions in different African countries, which are currently involved in and committed to the advancement of IKS, within and outside Africa
- There shall be a Governing Board comprising of prominent representatives of different stakeholders (from private and public sectors) with a track record of supporting and contributing to the advancement and sustainability of the African Indigenous Knowledge Systems (AIKS). The Board shall be responsible for approving plans, budgets and the scientific programmes
- There shall be an Institute’s Executive Management Council (EMC) comprising of the Directors of the Hub and the Nodes: Each Node will also have its own Management Team responsible for implementation of the decisions of the EMC pertaining to matters and programmes of the Institute
- There shall be a Scientific Committee, which will be responsible for the development of the Institute’s scientific programmes
- The Institute shall have Coordinators of the various programmes who can be based in the Hub or Nodes
- The Secretariat of the Institute shall be based at the Hub
- There shall be a binding agreement, in the form of a Consortium Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Heads of the partnering institutions
- There shall be specified Terms of Reference (ToRs) to govern the operational relationships between the Hub and the Nodes
- The responsibilities of the Board, Executive Management Council, Scientific and other Committees shall be stipulated in the respective Terms of Reference
