Indigenous renewable energy sources have been used in African local communities and cultures for thousands of years, in various social practices including agricultural irrigation and postharvest technologies. Examples of renewable energy sources are hydropower, wind, solar, biomass, ocean energy, biofuel and geothermal. Indigenous renewable energy sources can produce a whole lot of change and local communities can play the leadership role in their exploitation and application. The AIIKS takes cognizance of the fact that African Indigenous communities across the continent are increasingly becoming aware and leaders in the importance of using and promoting clean and renewable energy. They are beneficial as a clean energy source due to minimal negative impacts on the environment by mitigating air, water, soil pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Hence use of renewable energy also helps African indigenous communities to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change. Moreover, using locally- based renewable energy sources reduces community reliance on foreign resources of energy, especially fossil energy, which are expensive and environmentally unfriendly due to air, water and soil pollution. The Institute will endeavour to work with IK holders and practitioners, community leaders and other stakeholders, from both the private and public sectors, to promote IKS-based renewable energy initiatives in local communities. As part of the AIIKS community engagement, this will help local communities across the continent to address fundamental needs such as food and nutritional security, health, education, employment, infrastructure, climate change adaptation and mitigation, environmental health and sustainability. Contrary to western economic and environmental perspectives, African indigenous conceptualization of renewable energy is holistic. It integrates economic, environmental, spiritual, social, and cultural benefits. These are all intertwined to ultimately lead to strengthening the sovereignty of local communities in sustainable livelihood and development.
